Throughout Walt Disney's life, his family always came first. As a child Walt loved his family even when times were hard. Then as he grew older he continued to lead his family by becoming a father, caring for his parents, and never letting business take control. As Walt said "A man should never neglect his family for business."
Walt was born to a family of three brothers Herb, Ray, and Roy later he had a sister Ruth. Walt's father was very strict. Fortunately, his mother was much more lenient. One time Walt's father said that all the butter made must be sold, which would mean none for the family. Secretly, Walt's mother put the butter on the bottom of the bread she gave to the children. Years later Walt expanded his family with his wife Lillian. Eight years after their marriage Walt and Lillian had their first child, Diane Disney. Three years after that they adopted Sharon Mae Disney. Walt always took his job leading the family very seriously. He wanted his daughters to know that he was there for them. Diane Disney is quoted as saying, "Daddy never missed a father's function no matter how I discounted it. I'd say,Oh, Daddy, you don't need to come. It's just some stupid thing. But he'd always be there, on time." And of course, Walt never forgot to have fun with his family. In 1949 Walt and Lillian bought five acres to build their new house. Still having a great love for trains and despite Lillian's disapproval Walt built a mini railroad track around the exterior of the house! All in all there was nothing more important to Walt Disney than his family. |
